From exploring ancient caves and discovering the region’s history to enjoying a wildlife safari, boating on a peaceful lake, admiring magnificent mountains, and experiencing tribal heritage, every destination offered something unique.
Join us as we take you through our unforgettable Wayanad adventure!
Day 1: The Journey Begins
Our Wayanad adventure officially began on May 1. We boarded our vehicle at Edappally around 7:00 PM, excited about the journey and the experiences awaiting us.
As the city lights slowly disappeared behind us, the night journey became the perfect opportunity to relax and look forward to the days ahead. The thought of waking up in the cool, misty surroundings of Wayanad made the long drive feel even more exciting.
There is something special about overnight road trips. The quiet roads, the occasional stops, conversations along the way, and the anticipation of discovering a new place all add to the experience.
With plenty of excitement and expectations, we continued our journey towards the beautiful hills of Wayanad.
Day 2: Exploring the History, Wildlife and Beauty of Wayanad
We reached Wayanad at around 4:00 AM. After checking into our hotel, we freshened up and got ready to begin our sightseeing adventure.
A good breakfast was exactly what we needed before heading out for a busy day of exploring. Our itinerary included ancient caves, a heritage museum, and an exciting wildlife safari.
1. Edakkal Caves – A Journey into the Past
Our first major destination was the famous Edakkal Caves, one of Wayanad’s most fascinating historical attractions.
Unlike ordinary caves, Edakkal is renowned for its ancient rock engravings, which offer a glimpse into the lives, beliefs, and artistic expressions of people from the distant past.
Reaching the caves itself is an adventure. From the parking area, visitors must walk uphill along a steep, paved road to reach the entrance, where entry tickets are purchased. The climb continues with a series of steps leading towards the main cave area.
The uphill walk can be tiring, especially for elderly visitors, young children, and people with mobility difficulties. Comfortable walking shoes, drinking water, and a reasonable level of physical fitness can make the experience more manageable.
Once we reached the caves, the effort felt worthwhile.
The natural rock formations were fascinating, and the ancient carvings made the place even more special. The upper cave area is particularly notable for its rock engravings, which have attracted the attention of historians and researchers over the years.
Standing among these ancient rocks, it was amazing to imagine the people who once occupied this landscape and left behind traces of their lives.
The carvings are more than just artwork; they are valuable historical records that help us understand the cultural and social lives of earlier communities.
Our visit to Edakkal Caves was a wonderful beginning to the day, combining physical adventure with a fascinating journey through history.
2. Wayanad Heritage Museum – Discovering the Region’s Cultural Roots
After exploring Edakkal Caves, we headed to the Wayanad Heritage Museum, also known as the Ambalavayal Heritage Museum.
This visit offered a different kind of experience. While the caves introduced us to ancient rock art, the museum helped us explore the region’s cultural heritage through its collection of artefacts, sculptures, tools, and traditional objects.
The museum's exhibits are organised into four thematic sections: Veerasmruthi, Gothrasmruthi, Devasmruthi, and Jeevanasmruthi. Together, they showcase different aspects of Wayanad’s historical and cultural identity.
One of the interesting sections displayed soil samples from different parts of Kerala, highlighting the variety of soils found across the state and their importance to agriculture.
Further inside, we came across exhibits connected to tribal life and traditional occupations. These included agricultural implements, fishing equipment, and other objects that reflected the everyday activities of earlier communities.
The lower floor and the display cases near the staircase featured sculptures, carvings, and archaeological artefacts. We also saw traditional jewellery and objects associated with hunting and personal protection.
Each exhibit offered a small glimpse into a way of life shaped by local traditions, natural resources, and the environment.
It was a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in history, archaeology, and the cultural diversity of Wayanad.
By the time we finished exploring the museum, we had worked up quite an appetite. We took a break for lunch before heading towards our next destination.
3. Muthanga Wildlife Safari – Into the Heart of the Forest
The highlight of our afternoon was our visit to Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, for a wildlife safari.
The excitement began even before entering the forest. There was always the possibility of spotting wildlife along the way, and every turn offered a reason to look around carefully.
A safari through the forest is very different from ordinary sightseeing. Surrounded by tall trees, thick greenery, and the natural sounds of the wilderness, we experienced a refreshing change from the busy pace of city life. However, animal sightings depend on luck, timing, and natural conditions.
We were fortunate to spot peacocks, an elephant, deer, and other wildlife during the safari.
Seeing these animals in their natural surroundings was one of the most memorable moments of our Wayanad trip. Each sighting brought a little excitement, making us appreciate the richness of the region’s natural environment.
Evening: Checking In and Enjoying Dinner
After an exciting day of sightseeing, we returned to our hotel and checked in at around 6:00 PM.
By then, we were ready to relax after a full day of walking, exploring, and travelling. At around 7:15 PM, we headed out for dinner.
A satisfying meal was the perfect way to end the day. We returned to the hotel tired but happy, carrying memories of ancient caves, fascinating museum exhibits, and our exciting wildlife encounters.
It was time to recharge before another day of exploring Wayanad.
Day 3: Lakes, Mountains, Adventure and Tribal Heritage
Our second day of sightseeing began with breakfast before we set out to explore more of Wayanad.
The itinerary promised a wonderful mix of adventure activities, scenic landscapes, and cultural experiences.
4. Wayanad Adventure Camp and Karlad Lake – Where Adventure Meets Nature
Our first stop was Wayanad Adventure Camp at Karlad Lake, a destination that combines the peaceful beauty of a lake with exciting outdoor activities.
As soon as we arrived, the natural surroundings caught our attention. Green hills, calm waters, and the refreshing atmosphere created the perfect setting for a relaxing morning.
Boating on Karlad Lake
One of the highlights of our visit was the boating experience.
Karlad Lake is a lovely destination for anyone who enjoys spending time on the water. With boating options available at the lakeside, visitors can enjoy a leisurely ride while taking in the surrounding greenery.
Gliding across the calm waters was a refreshing experience. The hills around the lake added to its beauty, creating a picturesque landscape that was perfect for photographs.
Whether travelling with friends, family, or a partner, spending some time on the lake is a wonderful way to enjoy the quieter side of Wayanad.
Adventure Activities for Thrill Seekers
Karlad Lake is not just about peaceful views and boating. The Wayanad Adventure Camp also offers activities such as zip-lining, wall climbing, and other adventure experiences, depending on availability.
These activities add an exciting dimension to the visit, making the destination appealing to both nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts.
The best part is the contrast between the peaceful atmosphere of the lake and the adrenaline rush of the adventure activities. You can enjoy the calm surroundings one moment and try something more challenging the next.
A Peaceful Walk Along the Lakeside
Another feature we enjoyed was the paved walking path beside the lake.
Taking a leisurely stroll along the lakeside allowed us to slow down and appreciate the surroundings. With green hills on one side and the tranquil lake beside us, it was a lovely place to enjoy the fresh air and capture photographs.
Sometimes, the simplest moments become the most memorable ones. Our walk along Karlad Lake was one of those moments when we could simply enjoy nature without rushing from one attraction to another.
After spending some time exploring the area, we stopped for lunch before continuing our journey.
5. Banasura Sagar Dam – A Spectacular Landscape of Water and Mountains
Our next destination was the magnificent Banasura Sagar Dam, one of Wayanad’s most recognisable attractions.
The dam is part of the Banasurasagar Project, which was developed to support irrigation and drinking-water needs and to assist the Kakkayam hydroelectric project.
Named after Banasura, a figure from Hindu mythology, the dam is particularly famous for its impressive earthen structure and the vast reservoir surrounded by hills.
What makes this destination so special is the landscape.
As we approached the reservoir, the sight of blue water stretching between the green mountains was breathtaking. The surrounding hills, cloudy skies, and expansive water created a beautiful combination of colours.
The dam is known for its extensive earthen embankment, formed using compacted earth and rock materials. Its distinctive structure and scenic setting make it a popular destination for travellers, photographers, and nature lovers.
Visitors can enjoy the views, capture photographs, and explore activities available in the surrounding tourist area, which may include boating and other recreational experiences depending on operating conditions.
We spent some time admiring the scenery and capturing memories before moving on to the final major stop of our trip.
Banasura Sagar Dam was a reminder of how beautifully engineering and nature can come together to create a remarkable landscape.
6. En Ooru Tribal Heritage Village – A Glimpse into Indigenous Culture
By around 6:00 PM, we reached En Ooru Tribal Heritage Village, located in the Pookode area of Wayanad.
After spending much of our trip exploring natural landscapes and adventure destinations, this visit offered something different: an opportunity to appreciate the indigenous culture and traditions of Kerala.
En Ooru, which means “our village,” is a tribal heritage destination created to showcase the cultural identity, traditional knowledge, and artistic expressions of indigenous communities.
Set against the lush green slopes of Wayanad, the village combines cultural attractions with a beautiful natural setting.
Traditional Architecture and Tribal Heritage
One of the distinctive features of En Ooru is its collection of traditional tribal huts.
These structures reflect aspects of indigenous architecture and provide visitors with an introduction to the traditional lifestyles of tribal communities. Surrounded by greenery and rolling hills, the huts create an atmosphere that feels closely connected to the region's cultural roots.
Walking through the village was a different experience from visiting the usual tourist attractions. Instead of focusing only on scenery, we had the opportunity to appreciate the traditions and cultural identity that make Wayanad unique.
Traditional Performances and Indigenous Art Forms
The village also provides a platform for showcasing indigenous music, dance, and traditional art forms.
Performances featuring tribal music and rhythmic traditions, including Thudi Thalam, offer visitors a glimpse into cultural practices passed down through generations.
These performances are an important part of preserving indigenous heritage and creating opportunities for tribal artists to share their traditions with a wider audience.
Experiences like these add a meaningful cultural dimension to a trip, helping visitors understand that a destination is shaped not only by its landscapes but also by its people and traditions.
Handicrafts and Traditional Products
En Ooru also features stalls selling handicrafts, locally inspired products, and other items connected to traditional knowledge and craftsmanship.
Exploring these stalls offers an opportunity to appreciate the creativity and skills of local communities. Purchasing authentic products can also help support local artisans and contribute to community livelihoods.
Nature and Culture in Harmony
Beyond its cultural attractions, the village is surrounded by the natural beauty that Wayanad is known for.
The green hillside setting, traditional structures, and open spaces make it a pleasant place to walk around, take photographs, and enjoy the atmosphere.
Our visit to En Ooru gave us another perspective on Wayanad. It reminded us that travelling is not just about visiting famous places or capturing beautiful photographs; it is also about learning about the people, traditions, and heritage that make each destination special.
It was a meaningful way to conclude our sightseeing adventure.
The Journey Home
As evening arrived, it was time to say goodbye to Wayanad and begin our return journey towards Ernakulam.
Before continuing the overnight drive, we stopped for dinner at Copper Kitchen, Vythiri.
After two days filled with travel, adventure, sightseeing, and exploration, a good meal was exactly what we needed.
Once dinner was over, we resumed our journey home. The roads were quieter, the day’s excitement slowly settled, and we found ourselves looking back on all the experiences we had gathered over the past two days.
There is something peaceful about an overnight journey after a memorable trip. Even the long drive feels different when your mind is filled with beautiful landscapes, exciting adventures, and happy moments.
Finally, we reached Ernakulam at around 5:00 AM, bringing our Wayanad adventure to an end.
