Poolakund Water Falls, Chelakkara

For the last two months, I had not been able to travel anywhere. A few unprecedented events in my life had made it difficult to simply pick up my bag and take off. Sometimes, life has a way of putting travel plans on hold, even when the heart is longing to go somewhere.

After arriving in Chelakkara, a quiet village in Thrissur district, Kerala, I spent nearly two weeks looking for an opportunity to explore some of the places nearby. Finally, the opportunity came when one of my relatives offered to take me to Poolakund Waterfalls on his motorbike.

And so, after a long pause, I was travelling again.

The Road to Poolakund

Poolakund Waterfalls is about 3 kilometres from Pangarapilly Junction, along the road towards Elanad. At one point, we turned away from the main road towards Poolachodu.

The road gradually became narrower and rougher as we approached the destination. Near Poolachodu, the muddy track was barely more than a footpath in places. It was certainly not a road for a leisurely ride, but the rough approach was part of the experience.

We eventually left the motorbike behind and continued on foot.

The trail followed a small stream and led us into the woods. There was nothing spectacular at first. No grand entrance, no elaborate pathway—just trees, rocks, flowing water and the quiet sounds of the forest.

But perhaps that was exactly what I needed.

A Walk Through the Woods

The path was generally easy to walk, and the short hike through the forest was pleasant. There was no need to hurry.

When you walk through a place like this, it is better to slow down. Stop occasionally. Listen.

The forest has its own music—the rustling of leaves, the occasional call of a bird and the gentle gurgling of water making its way over the rocks.

The day itself was cool and sombre, giving the surroundings a peaceful, almost meditative character. After some time, we began to hear the distant sound of falling water.

The waterfall was getting closer.

The Waterfall Appears

Soon, huge rocks came into view, partly concealing the falls. The first few steps beneath the waterfall were formed naturally by stone. From there, the waterfall could be seen quite clearly.

Standing there and looking upstream, I could see the water cascading down over the rocks. It wasn't one of those dramatic waterfalls that overwhelms you with its size. Instead, Poolakund had a quieter charm.

Walking around the foot of the falls offered several beautiful vantage points. Every few steps seemed to provide a slightly different view.

Sit, Listen and Enjoy

It is better to be careful around the rocks beneath the waterfall. They can be slippery, and there is little reason to take unnecessary risks just to get closer to the water.

Instead, find a comfortable spot, sit down and simply enjoy the surroundings.

Listen to the gurgle of the water.

Watch the stream make its way through the rocks.

Look at the trees surrounding the waterfall.

For me, that was the real attraction of Poolakund.

A Small Journey, A Welcome Break

After spending some time at the falls, we returned the way we had come.

It was only a short trip, but after two months without travelling, even this small journey felt meaningful. Sometimes travel doesn't have to mean going somewhere far away or visiting famous destinations.
