Uttari Betta Sunrise Trek
There’s something special about leaving the city while everyone else is asleep.
The roads are quiet, the air is cold, and somewhere ahead, a hill waits in complete darkness.
For us, that hill was Uttari Betta, also known as Hutridurga — a historic fortified hill near Kunigal, around 65 km from Bengaluru. Rising to approximately 1,142 metres above sea level, Uttari Betta is one of the popular trekking destinations around Bengaluru.
But this wasn’t going to be an ordinary daytime trek.
We were there to climb through the darkness and watch the sunrise from the top.
The Journey Begins
Our adventure began late at night.
We gathered at BMC, Indiranagar, carrying our essentials, trekking gear and, of course, plenty of excitement. Bengaluru was still awake in some places, but as our vehicle moved farther away from the city, the familiar city lights slowly disappeared.
The journey towards Kunigal was peaceful. Most of us used the time to rest, knowing that the real adventure would begin in just a few hours.
After some time, we stopped at the Kunigal Industrial Area for a short break.
The temperature was around 15°C, and the cold was immediately noticeable.
At that hour, nothing felt better than a hot cup of tea.
Across the road was Tandoori Chai, where a steaming cup of tea gave us exactly the warmth we needed. Standing there in the middle of a cold night, with a hot cup warming our hands, felt like a small luxury.
It was just tea.
But at that hour, it was perfect.
We rested inside the vehicle for a while, trying to gather enough energy for the climb ahead.
After our short break, we continued towards the base of Uttari Betta.
Reaching the Base
By the time we reached the base, the temperature had dropped further.
The small village at the foot of Hutridurga, known as Aalada Mara, was almost completely silent. The village has a cluster of houses along with the local Maramma Temple and Adi Narayana Temple.
But at that hour, everything was wrapped in darkness.
The anticipation slowly grew.
We knew that if we wanted to catch the sunrise from the summit, we had to start climbing in complete darkness.
At around 4:00 AM, we finally started our trek.
Trekking Through the Darkness
The trail ahead was barely visible beyond the narrow beams from our torches. The cold air, quiet surroundings and occasional sounds from the forest created an atmosphere that felt completely different from a daytime trek.
There was no city noise.
No traffic.
Just our footsteps, occasional conversations and the sound of the wind.
The ascent is generally considered moderate and can be managed by beginners with reasonable fitness. The trail gradually climbs upwards, with rocky sections and steps carved into the hill.
In several places, railings and properly carved steps make the ascent easier and safer.
But trekking at 4:00 AM gives even a familiar trail a completely different personality.
Every turn felt mysterious.
Every shadow looked deeper.
And every time we looked behind us, the tiny lights from our group seemed to disappear into the vast darkness.
Yet, as we climbed higher, the darkness slowly became less intimidating and more magical.
Reaching the Summit
After hours of climbing through the darkness, we finally reached the summit.
And then came the moment we had been waiting for.
The first rays of sunlight began appearing over the horizon.
The tiredness from the climb suddenly seemed insignificant.
We stood quietly, watching the sky change colour.
What had been hidden in complete darkness just a few minutes earlier was slowly revealed — distant hills, valleys, rocky landscapes and the surrounding countryside.
The morning light spread across everything in shades of gold.
It was one of those moments when you stop talking because there is simply nothing to say.
You just watch.
The Best Part – A Cup of Tea on the Hill
And then came another unexpectedly memorable moment.
Someone was selling tea at the summit.
After trekking in the freezing early-morning weather, that hot cup of tea felt absolutely perfect.
Sometimes, the simplest things become the most memorable parts of a journey.
A hot cup of tea.
Cold hands.
The morning sun.
A tired body.
And a beautiful view after a long climb.
That combination was hard to beat.
We stood there with our cups of tea, watching the sun rise higher while the surrounding landscape slowly came alive.
The Rock Tunnel
One of the interesting landmarks along the route is a tunnel-like structure formed naturally by the rocks.
Passing through it feels like entering another part of the mountain. It also serves as a reassuring sign that you are following the correct route towards the summit.
The climb continued, and slowly the sky began to change.
The darkness was no longer completely black.
A faint glow appeared on the horizon.
After making our way to the summit, we explored the area around the Shankareshwara Temple, situated at the summit known as Sankarakumbhi.
One of the most beautiful details here is a small rectangular opening in the rock beside the temple. The water collected inside it catches the morning sunlight and reflects it beautifully, almost like an emerald.
We spent some time around the temple, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and spectacular views from the top.
After sunrise and exploring the summit, we started making our way back down.
Trek Down
The route that had looked mysterious and challenging in complete darkness now looked completely different in daylight.
We could finally see the rocks, hills, valleys and trails that we had crossed earlier with only our headlamps to guide us.
The descent was quicker, and before long we were back at the base.
The fort originally had a series of seven entrances at different levels leading towards the top, although today only six of these entrances can be found.
A series of steps carved into the rock leads towards a small stone entrance between the ruined walls of the fort.
Walking through these old stone structures while the morning light slowly spread across the hill made the experience even more memorable.
It was fascinating to think about how this same hill, which we had just climbed for the sunrise, had once been part of a fortified settlement.
After completing the trek, we started our journey back towards Bengaluru.
By now, everyone had worked up a serious appetite.
We stopped on the way for breakfast, which felt well deserved after the early-morning climb.
There is something satisfying about eating a hot breakfast after finishing a trek — especially when the day started at 4:00 AM.
Back to Bengaluru
By around 11:00 AM, we reached Bengaluru.
What had started the previous night with a late-night pick-up had turned into a memorable sunrise adventure.
From the quiet roads of the night to the freezing temperature at the base, from trekking through darkness to watching the first rays of sunlight from the summit, Uttari Betta gave us an experience that was much more than just a trek.
