Banganga Tank, Mumbai

  

Can you believe there is an architectural wonder in posh area of Malabar Hill and Walkeshwar in Mumbai?  Banganga is an ancient water tank surrounded by Hindu temples on all sides of the Walkeshwar Temple Complex in Malabar Hill area of Mumbai, in the Indian State of  Maharashtra.

MYTH AND REALITY 

Legend  says that Lord Ram had stopped at the spot in search of his kidnapped wife Sita. Rama had asked his brother Lakshmana to bring him some water. Laxman instantly shot an arrow into the ground, and water from Ganges gushed forth from the ground. Hence the place is called Banganga, the Ganga created on a baan (arrow). 

The tank was constructed in 12th century by Silhara dynasty who ruled the present day Mumbai-Thane region between 9th and 13 th centuries. The tank was rebuilt in 1715 out of the donation given by Rama Kamath.

Sitting on the laid steps, watching the ducks, feeling the cool water beneath our feet.... was a memorable experience.

Nowadays, It is one of the hot spot for many artists and photographers.  It was really amazing to see white ducks swimming through the water.  One can walk around the tank and visit all the temples on the eastern and western side of the tank. When I stroll around the tank, I saw one lady feeding ducks. The buildings around the tank will tell you the stories of many generations that had lived here.

Reflections

Those who are fan of  Hindustani music can participate an annual two-day cultural festival  which is organized by the Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) in the month of February.

 When the lights started to glitter, the view becomes more and more fascinating.

 And that was the end of a wonderful Sunday afternoon.
