If there is one festival that perfectly captures Mumbai's energy, excitement and community spirit, it has to be Dahi Handi, also known as Govinda.

Celebrated across India as part of the Janmashtami festivities, Dahi Handi commemorates the playful childhood stories of Lord Krishna, who was famously fond of butter. It is celebrated on the second day of Janmashtami. According to legend, Krishna and his friends would form human pyramids to reach pots of butter kept high above the ground. Today, that playful tradition has evolved into a spectacular public celebration, with teams of Govindas competing to reach and break a suspended earthen pot.

And if you want to experience Dahi Handi at its most energetic, Mumbai is the place to be.

The City Gets Ready

My Dahi Handi experience began in the afternoon.

By 3:30 pm, the Govindas had already started arriving. Groups of young men, dressed for the occasion, gathered at the celebration venue, full of excitement and anticipation. The atmosphere gradually became louder and more festive as more teams arrived.

By 4:30 pm, several teams were taking part in trials. There were cash prizes, gifts and other rewards on offer, adding another layer of excitement to the event. But beyond the prizes, what stood out was the incredible sense of teamwork. Every member of a Govinda group had an important role to play.

Building the Human Pyramid

The main attraction of Dahi Handi is, of course, the human pyramid.

The pot, or Handi, is suspended high above the ground. The Govindas then climb onto one another, carefully forming a human pyramid. Each level supports the next, and the climbers have to maintain remarkable balance and coordination.

Watching the pyramid rise is thrilling. Just when you think it cannot possibly go any higher, another Govinda climbs upward.

And then comes the final ascent.

At the very top is usually a young and agile participant—the little Govinda—whose job is to reach the Handi and break it.

The little Govinda is perhaps the most unforgettable part of the spectacle.

Perched at the top of a swaying human pyramid, the young climber has to make the final move towards the pot. Below him, his teammates hold the pyramid together, while the crowd watches and cheers.

It is a wonderful demonstration of trust. The person at the top can only succeed because of the many people supporting him from below.

9:00 pm: The Moment of Truth

By around 9:00 pm, the celebrations had reached their peak.

I managed to capture a sequence of photographs showing the pyramid gradually taking shape, rising higher and higher as the Govindas climbed over one another.

Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for.

The little Govinda finally reached the Handi.

In a burst of excitement, the pot was broken, showering its contents over the participants and marking the climax of the celebration. The cheers from the crowd made the moment even more spectacular.

More Than Just a Sport

At first glance, Dahi Handi may look like an adventurous sport or competition. But watching it in Mumbai, it becomes clear that it is much more than that.

It is about teamwork, trust, tradition and celebration. Every successful pyramid depends on dozens of people working together and trusting one another.

The music, crowds, colourful decorations and enthusiastic Govindas transform ordinary streets into a festival arena. For a visitor, it is a chance to see a very different side of Mumbai—a city that celebrates its traditions with extraordinary energy.

Dahi Handi is one of those experiences that is difficult to fully describe in words. You have to see the pyramid rising, hear the crowd cheering and watch the little Govinda make that final climb.

My photographs from the celebration captured only a few moments, but they preserve the excitement of an unforgettable evening.
